AVPA is partnering with The Angel Accelerator to bring you a series of workshops on angel investing for impact in Africa. The 12-week program begins March 3rd, and will leverage the learnings from the startup accelerator model to deliver hands-on training on how to invest in early-stage and growing impactful companies.

Education: The program teaches a variety of topics. Participants meet weekly for lectures, workshops, and curated conversations.

Investing: Participants don’t just learn how to invest, they actually invest, using the capital from the participants, into investment(s) chosen by the cohort.

Beyond: The new investors then become part of a global network of fellow graduates, with continued guidance to make more group-based investments.

To position the participants well for the program, we are introducing the content through a series of seven free weekly webinars. The webinars will run every Wednesday through January and February, at 6pm WAT, 7pm SAST, 8pm EA.

2. January 20th: How Philanthropy and Investing are Connected by Impact Investing

It may feel like philanthropy and investing are unrelated, but once you understand impact investing you discover that there is a continuum of choices, with philanthropy in one corner and maximize-your-return investing in the other.

Last week we explained how philanthropy and investing are connected. This week we build on that to show how impact is defined and measured, and to show how there is a plethora of options of early-stage investments that can blend doing good with doing well.

Vocabulary, terms, and deal structures. The realities of valuation. The realities of being an Angel in a world dominated by the bigger checks of venture capital and other institutional investors.

5. February 10: Angel Investing is a Group Activity

Most startups fail.  Why?  Why do so few succeed? This week we'll walk through more than a dozen startup failures. If all goes well, you'll not repeat these same mistakes.

7. February 24: Seeing the Future

Success startup investing involves seeing the future. This week we'll explain how that works between the visionary entrepreneurs and skeptical Angels. And this week we'll look into the future and details of the Angel Accelerator, answering any final questions before we ask you to sign up for the paid program.
